Luwangfen Formation

Luwangfen Fm

Period:
Neogene

Age Interval:
Late Miocene (Tortonian, Messinian), N1

Province:
Henan

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at the quarry of Luwangfen town (E113°56′, N32°25′), north of Xinxiang City, Henan Province (BGMRH(Hennan)P, 1997). It was firstly used by the Third Team of Shanxi Regional Geological Survey Group (TTSRGSG) (1976). BGMRH(Hennan)P (1989, 1997), Zheng et al. (1999), and Gao et al. (2014a) all employed it.

Synonyms: BGMRH(Henan)P (1997) and Gao et al. (2014a) considered that both the Bajiagou Fm and the Sishiwuligang Fm are synonyms of the Luwangfen Fm.

Lithology and Thickness

Lower part is characterized by purplish-red and red claystones interbedded with white medium thick marlstones, containing brownish-yellow fine sandstones. Middle part consists of white and greyish-white thick lamellar marlstones, cryptocrystal limestones with calcareous sandstones, mudstones, and gravels. Upper part is formed by greyish-white medium thick to deep thick marlstones interbedded with brownish-yellow and greyish-green muddy sandstones, containing red claystones. It contains fossil mammals and gastropods. Its thickness is in range of 26~70 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Continental marl

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

In the type section, the Luwangfen Fm unconformably contacts with the underlying Ordovician Majiagou Fm (greyish-brown limestones). In other regions, this formation is in conformable contact with the underlying Hebi Fm or the Luoyang Fm.

Upper contact

In the type section, the Luwangfen Fm has no overlying deposits. In other regions, this formation disconformably contacts with the overlying Pangcun Fm

Regional extent

The formation is widely distributed to area of Anyang, Xinxiang, Zhengzhou, Luoyang, Pingdingshan, Lushi, and Xinzheng, Henan Province.

Fossils

Mammals: Hipparion dermatorhinum, H. platyodus, Chilotherium sp., Cervidae indet. (TTSRGSG, 1976). Gastropods: Cathaica (Eucathaica) fasciola, Physa assuturalis, Indoplanorbis exustus (Wang, 1995).

Age

Based on the fossil mammals (Hipparion fauna), the Luwangfen Fm of Henan Province is normally correlated to the Baode Fm of Shanxi Province, and is in age of Late Miocene.
